Tip # 2 - COMBY YOUR HAIR FROM BOTTOM UP

comb your hair from the bottom up

The author of the Curly Girl Method says that people with curly hair shouldn’t brush their hair, mentioning that it changes the natural shape of the curl, even for just brief moments. If needed, it should be done with the fingers instead.

Even though I understand this technique for short and not very dense curly hair, my hair is long with a lot of volume for which I need to use a brush to untangle it.

In case you’re like me, with long hair where untangling with your fingers is not enough, this tip will be handy to you.

I like to untangle my hair with a brush, but to do this, I need to be very cautious. Wet hair is very fragile, especially curly hair and can’t be brushed like a straight one.

Hair should be wet when brushing

You should know by now that if you try to brush your curly hair dry that it will end up frizzy and with broken hair, right?

Hair should be very damp, so a good timing to do this is on the shower with gentile movements. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair (because it has less chemical bonds maintaining it on its original shape), so, easier to break. After you wash your hair (with either low poo or co wash), place a generous amount of conditioner from the ears down so it’s easier for the brush to slide on the hair, making it better to untangle the end knots.

Always comb your hair from the bottom up

To avoid breaking your hair and compounding knots on the bottom, you should start combing from the hair ends and gradually going up with your comb/brush, gently detangling every knot. If you start up, you will gather all the knots on the hair ends, having to force your brush to untangle them, easily breaking your hair.

A healthy hair is very easy to untangle on the shower. In case you struggle doing this, you probably need a haircut just to take your split ends out. This will help you a lot on your curl definition.

Just like the products we use, you should as well be very careful on the type of brush/comb you use on your curls! Check here the best combs and brushes to untangle your hair and the reason why.
