MÉTODO CURLY GIRL
MÉTODO CURLY GIRL PORTUGAL
O The Curly Girl Method (or MCG or CG) was created by an English hairdresser named Lorraine Massey more than 15 years ago in order to help everyone who didn't know how to handle curly hair.
This hairdresser started by realizing that all hair was treated equally in the profession and decided to try on her clients some of the methods mentioned in the book, such as discouraging the use of shampoo, not using products with silicones, not using hair brushes, avoiding stretching with heat sources, not cutting curly hair while wet, using hair gel, etc.
The purpose of the Curly Girl method is to take better care of naturally wavy / curly hair, minimizing external damage by products and utensils and accentuating the potential of its natural curl.
The author decided to add all the relevant information regarding the Curly Girl Method and how to practice it in a book called Curly Girl: The Handbook which I highly recommend reading.
Since its publication, the Curly Girl Method has started to take on a life of its own within the online natural hair community and social networks and with it new ideas and practices have also started to be made that were not mentioned in the original method.
According to the author, we should be careful with the following ingredients when we buy products for curly hair:
• SULPHATES • for being extremely aggressive and drying
• SILICONES • create a false barrier to give a shiny and silky look
• DRYING ALCOHOLS • absorb hair hydration
• MINERAL OILS, WAXES AND PETROLEUM DERIVATIVES • similar to SILICONES
• PRODUCTS WITH EXCESS OF VEGETABLE OILS AND BUTTERS • have the risk of accumulating in the hair
The author also defends:
• there is no final wash before starting the Curly Girl method
• it is only done with co wash (any type of shampoo is prohibited, even if low poo)
• only use silicone hair massage brushes or fingers on the scalp, plastic ones are prohibited
• only fingers or a long-toothed comb are used to untangle hair (brushes are prohibited (as well as trim)
• prohibited to use solid products (even with compatible ingredients in the Curly Girl method)
• only use the dryer with diffuser at low temperature and speed
• it is prohibited to use very heavy creams in terms of vegetable oils and butters
• prohibited using any type of silicone
• prohibited to use parabens and phthalates
• prohibited to use products with sodium hydroxide
• forbidden fragrance/parfum/parfume
• prohibited to use dry shampoo
• forbidden cuts with wet hair at the hairdresser
I want to mention that I I don't follow the Curly Girl method to the letter for not agreeing with some of the statements that the author makes, namely in relation to ingredients and behaviors with curly hair. However, here is the information for those looking to follow the Curly Girl Method 100%.
You can also find information on scientific evidence on the Curly Girl Method here.
