Tip # 4 - DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR OFTEN

don't wash your hair too often

Just to be clear here: I am not saying that you shouldn’t shower every day! But, you can have a shower and not have to wash your hair as often.

This tip is specific for curly hair, since it’s drier and when washed requires very often deep conditioning.

Curly hair does not require daily deep cleansing. Compared to straight hair, curly hair is much drier so, if you use shampoo very often, it will end up cleaning your natural oils as well, which is produced in low quantities and its much needed. Curls will seem dull, lose their texture, allowing itself to frizz and breakage.

Shampoos we use in our routine aim to remove dirt, impurities and oils produced by the scalp. Hair due to the shape of snails, do not let this grease reaches the length of the hair, thus naturally drier. If these natural oils are removed very often, hair will tend to become increasingly dry. The best solution for this is less frequently wash hair.

The shampoos we use on our hair routine aim to remove dirt, impurities and oils produced by the scalp. Curly hair due to the shape of curls and coils, doesn’t let this oil reach the end of the hair, thus being naturally drier. If these natural oils are removed very often, hair will tend to become increasingly dry. The best solution for this is to wash your hair less frequently.

When should I wash my hair?

There is no rule. You should wash your curly hair when you feel it really needs.

There are no pre-defined schedules for this, this means you will have to know how to assess the state of your hair. Curly hair usually needs to be washed when you notice lack of definition and/or volume, while straight hair you can see by the amount of oiliness on the scalp.

Not all curls are the same. Some types of hair textures require to be washed once a week, while others might need to be washed 2/3 times a week.

Sometimes curly hair can last for 3 or 4 days without being washed, but some other times the day after looks terrible with the new styling cream you tried, so you might need to wash it again.

Lack of definition after a refresh and absence of volume, might be a sign that you need to wash your hair.

Your daily life routine has a lot of influence too. For example, if you swim everyday, you need to rinse the chlorine from your hair on a daily basis.

In case you need to wash your hair very often, I strongly advise you to wash with co wash, since it is a less aggressive way to wash the scalp. This requires washing your hair with a more vigorous massage since there is no foam to do a chemical wash.

Co wash is the best method for those who have to wash very frequently curly hair.

It’s very important to notice the way we wash our hair, because a bad cleansing can lead to irritation, itching and dandruff on the scalp.

How about you? How often do you need to wash your hair?

    • Hi my dear, thanks for the comment! 🙂
My maximum, in my laziness, is a week and the minimum is every two days. As you say, it depends on the routine! A little kiss 😘😘

    Hi Martha,
Thanks for all the help on the blog and instagram.
I usually wash once a week with shampoo, mascara and conditioner. During the week I do a co-wash as I go to the gym I can't go without washing my hair that day because I get the oily roots of perspiration. I have been co-washing without cleaning agents. What's the difference to what cleaning agents have? Can this co-wash with cleaning agents be compared to low poo shampoo?
    Kisses

    • Hi Cátia, thanks for your message first! I'm really glad you're enjoying it and I look forward to following your journey! ❤️
Well, in my perspective, a co wash is with conditioner and a conditioner by itself doesn't have any type of surfactants, that is, it doesn't have any cleaning agents. The cleaning agents that many cowashes have are called amphoteric surfactants, which are actually more conditioning agents than cleaning agents. If the co wash has anionic, cationic or similar surfactants, then I call it low poo because it has surfactants not too weak but also not too strong to be sulfates.
It all depends on the product we are talking about and if the brand can really be true in the way it advertises the product! 😊
I don't know if I explained myself well, but if you still have doubts, say so! 😊
      A huge kiss! 😘

    Good evening!

I'm new here, but I'm loving reading your tips and explanations. I have a question: I also have curly and very frizzy hair. In addition, it is thin and falls a lot! I was advised, at a clinic specializing in hair loss, to never use conditioner except on the ends, as it would even facilitate the fall. In fact, they even advised me to use a shampoo for oily hair (I seem to have an oily root, although I never realized it) and only use conditioner and/or mask to moisturize.
Therefore, I was confused reading this article. Can we wash our hair with conditioner if we need to wash it more often as it doesn't have the most aggressive washing agents? And, in this case, do we apply the conditioner all over the hair or just half upside down?
Grateful. in advance, for your attention!
